May 9 Meeting: Bob “Dr. Mac” LeVitus Presents “A Few of My Favorite Things”

Bob “Dr. Mac” LeVitus will once again make HAC a stop on his annual Mid-Atlantic MUG Tour (and boy, will he be surprised by our new meeting place!). Bob will expound on a myriad of Apple-related topics in a presentation entitled, “A Few of My Favorite Things…” From Mac OS X Lion to iOS 5 and from the iPhone to the iPad and beyond, Bob will offer his favorite tips, techniques, apps, products and accessories (and possibly even a surprise or two) in a rapid-fire presentation designed to inform and entertain Mac and i-Device enthusiasts young and old.

Bob “Dr. Mac” LeVitus has been offering his opinion on Apple products for over 25 years. His Dr. Mac column in the Houston Chronicle is entering its 16th year and he’s hard at work on his 64th book, Mac OS X Mountain Lion For Dummies.

Because of our special guest, we will start promptly at 6:30 PM with no question and answer session for this meeting, so be sure to arrive promptly to get a good seat and enjoy Bob’s visit to the fullest.

We will also be taking Bob out for dinner after the meeting at an undisclosed location, but all HAC members and guests are welcome to join us.

April 11, 2012 Meeting: Final Cut X Introduction, Using Stock Media In Your Project and iPad Favorites

This month, Chuck will deliver his long-promised introduction to Final Cut X. Come find out what all the fuss has been about, and why you need to take a look at the new version of Apple’s professional video editing program, regardless of how passive and aggressive your interest in video is.

As a related subject, we’ll take a look at stock media sites and how they can provide both primary and secondary content for both your personal and professional projects.

To start out, we’ll take a look at some favorite iOS programs for those who are getting their first iPads and iPhones.

In case you thought we forgot, we’ll start our with Question and Answer session, and wrap up with our Meeting-After-The-Meeting Dinner at a restaurant to be selected by those attending.

March 14, 2012 Meeting: The New iPad, iPad on Your Mac, and a Final Cut X Demo

The big news was last week’s announcement of the new iPad, and the impending release date. We will talk about what the new version of Apple’s tablet-dominating device offers to all levels of users, whether it will be worth the upgrade, and why.

No matter what version of your iPad, there are times you want to send its content to different locations. Via Apple TV, you can send video to your big screen TV, but what if you want to send it to your Mac. We’ll show you how with some new utilities.

Held over from last month, we’ll also give you a look at Final Cut X, the pro-level video editor from Apple that has caused such an uproar in the video production market.

All of this is subject to last-minute change, since you just never know what Apple might do next.

You can also count on our always-fun Question and Answer session, and our Meeting-After-The-Meeting Dinner. Last month we tried Chili’s. Where will we go this month? Cast your vote among the many choices offered by our new location.

Last month, less-than-ideal weather kept some of our members at home. This month there are no excuses, and we hope to see you for an evening of fun and information with your HAC friends.

February 8, 2012 Meeting: A New Meeting Location and Macworld | iWorld 2012 Wrap-Up!

The February meeting of the Hershey Apple Core will be held on February 8, starting at 6:30 PM at our new meeting place, The Hospital & Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania, 4750 Lindle Road Harrisburg, PA 17111.

Yes, our very, very long tradition of meeting at the Hershey Public Library has come to an end. As we discussed at our January meeting, due to budget cuts, the library has changed their closing time to 8 PM, which just doesn’t give us adequate time for a meaningful meeting. Thanks to HAC member Arvy Svalbonas, however, we have a bright, shiny new place to get together each month…The Board Room of The Hospital & Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania! On Lindle Road right beside the Sheraton Harrisburg/Hershey, it is only minutes away from the Library, with each access from pretty much every direction. Directions to the meeting can be found on the HAP web site.

We hope the change won’t affect your attendance. The new facilities offer lots of new opportunities and possibilities for our meetings. You will understand once you see it. We have only one restriction, and it isn’t one that will cause any problems: no food or drink in the Board Room, please. Other than that, it is business as usual!

This month, we’ll wrap up all the excitement from Macworld | iWorld 2012. Chuck spent the week working the show floor, and will bring back his impressions, updates on the coolest new products, a report on all the new events and parties that marked a new direction for the show, and more.

Of course, we will have our always-informative Question and Answer Session, and our Meeting-After-The-Meeting dinner at…well, we don’t quite know yet. The new location offers many choices, so we’ll be taking votes and heading out for a new culinary adventure, so plan to come hungry.

The weather isn’t bad enough to keep yo home, so you have no excuse not to come out with your HAC friends and see our new meeting place!

January 11, 2012 Meeting: Managing ebooks on the iPad and Kindle, and the Future of HAC

The next meeting of the Hershey Apple Core will be held on Wednesday, January 11, 2012 starting at 6:30 PM at the Hershey Public Library in Hershey PA.

Our first meeting of 2012 will feature a discussion of managing your ebook library on both the iPad and Kindle. Sure, you can do it by hand, but we’ll show you a terrific utility that not only manages your library, but also handles conversions between ebook formats.

We will also discuss some changes that are coming to HAC. If you were at our last meeting, you know that access to the Hershey Public Library is changing. We will discuss some options open to us and what they mean for the future of the group. Your input in these decisions is both wanted and needed..and no, you won’t be drafted for anything. We promise.

We’ll also have our usual Question & Answer session where we all learn something, and our Meeting-After-The-Meeting at Fuddruckers. Come on out and enjoy the first meeting of the year with your friends at HAC.

December 2011 Meeting: Holiday Gift Guide

We’ll wrap up the year with some Apple-oriented holiday gift ideas for you and yours. Sure, there are some obvious choices; we will cover those, plus some we bet you haven’t thought about. We want you to bring your ideas too since no one can keep track of everyone. Whether it is Mac, iOS, digital photography, or tech in general, we have something for everyone.

As always, we’ll have our Question and Answer Session to solve your problems, and lots of informal fun at the Meeting-After-The-Meeting at Fuddruckers, so plan to spend the whole evening with your friends at HAC.

November 9 2011 Meeting: A Special Meeting with Adam Engst of TidBITS and Take Control

The next meeting of the Hershey Apple Core will be held on Wednesday, November 9, 2011 starting at 6:30 PM at the Hershey Public Library in Hershey PA.

This month will be something new for the Hershey Apple Core. We will have a joint meeting with the Bay Area Macintosh Users Group in Florida via Skype. Our special virtual guest will be Adam Engst of TidBITS and Take Control ebooks. Adam is one of the most respected people in the Mac community, and also is a member of the MacNotables panel, so we will be participating in a live recording of the show…and if the Internet gods smile on us, it will be video! Adam will be talking about OS X Lion, a world without Steve Jobs, the iPhone 4S, and taking questions from the audiences at both groups.

We will distribute all the wisdom that inevitably arises from our Question and Answer session, and will head out to Fuddruckers for the Meeting-After-The-Meeting at the end of the evening.

We hope to see you at this very special meeting, and Adam Engst’s very first appearance at HAC.
